Did Jesus ever call himself God?

Much has been made of the fact that Jesus never actually used the words: "I am God". However if we take a few moments to explore what Jesus did say you will soon find that he used every other way he could of saying this without actually using the words.

Jesus claimed to be the same as God

"Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father" (John 14:9). In effect he says that if you have seen him you have seen God.

Jesus used the name of God

“I tell you the truth,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!” (John 8:58) The people who heard him say this had no doubt about what he was saying because, we are told, they picked up stones to stone him. If you read back into the old testament in the book of Exodus chapter 3 verse 14 you will see: "God said to Moses, “I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to you.’ I AM is the very name of God and Jesus uses that name for himself.

For this reason the Jews tried all the harder to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God. (John 5:18). In the eyes of the people who heard him teach first hand he was claiming to be equal with God.

Jesus claimed to have the authority of God

When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” (Mark 2:5) - Jesus claims to have the authority to forgive sins. As sins are things that are offenses against God, only God has the authority to forgive them. By claiming this authority Jesus was claiming the authority of God.

Everyone believed that Jesus was calling himself God

“We are not stoning you for any of these,” replied the Jews, “but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God.” (John 10:33) Once again people are pretty clear about what he is saying. Remember these are the very people who hear him firsthand - not through the stories of the Bible but face to face.

He claimed to be the way to God

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No-one comes to the Father except through me.If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.” (John 14:6). Jesus doesn't just say we should look for truth but that he himself is the truth.

Jesus claimed to have power over death itself

Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.” (John 2:19) But perhaps one of the greatest things he claimed was that he had power over death itself. Even with all our modern day understanding and science we don't have the capacity to control death. Jesus demonstrated this power by rising from the dead himself. Only God has this power.

What do you think?

So you see that although Jesus never used the words: "I am God" he said it in other ways. This is a claim that no other founder of a religion makes. Buddha did not claim to be God; Moses never said that he was Yahweh; Mohammed did not identify himself as Allah; and nowhere will you find Zoroaster claiming to be Ahura Mazda.
